23 million UK motorists knowingly put off vehicle repairs
increasing their chances of being involved in a road accident -
25th February 2008
71% of the UK's motorists (23 million) are putting
themselves and others at risk of injury or worse from
road accidents by failing to have vehicle faults they are
aware of repaired quickly. These are the findings of car
insurance company esure
after research conducted by
MyVoice between the 5th and 10th of February surveying a
cross section of UK drivers over 18. It also found that 1 in 3
motorists ignore car defects to avoid repair bills, whilst 19%
ignore dashboard warning lights. 31% say that they don't have
time to take their car to a garage for repair, with 8% saying
that they would only get their vehicle repaired if it became
totally unusable, whilst 10% ignore faults until their
MOT is due.
The results from the survey also revealed that 72% of drivers
didn't know what all the important warning lights on their
dashboard were, and as a result of this 49% have ignored what
could be an emergency flashing light on their dashboard
potentially increasing the risk of a
car accident.
Often repairing faults early is far cheaper than waiting
until faults get worse, which may spread to other components
causing major damage. There also could be unnecessary insurance
costs if a road
accident claim is made after a
car accident caused by a faulty vehicle.
