Drivers from the other European states causing
over 18,000 crashes annually - 20th November 2007
Drivers from other European Union countries are increasing the number of
road accidents on the
UK's roads significantly according to a study by the
Association of British Insurers (ABI).
The study found
that over 18,000 collisions a year on the UK's roads can be attributed
to drivers from the other EU states, and heavy goods vehicles from these
countries are three times more likely to be involved in an
road accident in Britain than ones from the UK.
|
Drivers from the UK caused more than 5,000
road
accidents driving in continental Europe during 2006. Director General of
the ABI said: “Greater movement through Europe must not mean more dangerous
roads.
With 45 major differences in the road laws between member
states it's hardly surprising that cross-border driving is leading to more
collisions." He also called for the UK government and European Commission to
try to
aid drivers driving through Europe. |
