VOSA is to get £24 million extra to
help clampdown on foreign goods vehicles operating across
Britain illegally - 12th May 2008
Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick
announced last week that a further £24 million would be made
available for tougher checks on foreign goods vehicles driving
across Britain.
This move will be welcomed by road safety
campaigners with the high number of foreign goods vehicles which
are involved in
road accidents on the UK's roads. The extra funding
will be used to open up two more
Vehicle and Operator Service
Agency (VOSA) enforcement sites along with a 50% increase in
the number of checks that are carried out.

HGVs form overseas are more
likely to be unroadworthy, overloaded or have a
driver who has exceeded his driving time than
their UK counterparts according to enforcement
figures which puts them at greater risk of being
involved in an
road accident. VOSA is acquiring better
technology with the use of weigh-in-motion
sensors which can detect over laden HGVs and
number plate recognition to track vehicles that
have a poor record of compliance.
Prohibitions where vehicles
are prevented from continuing until faults are
rectified are expected to double, and with
around 97 extra staff being taken onboard, it
all points to reductions in
road accidents on the UK's roads which
involve foreign goods vehicles.
