Driving whilst using mobile phone handsets will
now result in increased fines and 3 points added to licence - 1st March
2007
In reacting to a
general apathy from the public and a lack of control by police,
legislators have taken action to curb the use of handheld mobile phones
whilst driving a vehicle
Since the
original law was introduced a few years ago, the public have been
reluctant to accept the rule. Research into
car accident claims has
shown that drivers reactions were slower when distracted by using a
mobile phone.

The original law change was introduced in 2003 As a
result, the current fine of £30 will now be increased to £60 with three
penalty points being added to the offenders licence. The additional
penalties will affect younger drivers in particular.
They will suffer from increased insurance costs more so
than other user groups and if they reach 6 points within their first 2 years
on the road their licence can be revoked. They must then re-sit the driving
test. The fines scale increases for drivers of buses, coaches or HGVs.
