3,172 fatalities were recorded
on Britain's roads in 2006, down from 3201 in
2005.
The number of people seriously
injured fell to 28,390 only marginally lower
than 28,954 recorded a year earlier.
Total casualties figures fell
from 258,404, from 271,017 in 2005.
169 children were killed on
the roads in 2006, 20% more than in 2005 - this
was apparently due to 2005 being an
exceptionally low figure (in 2004 for example
the total number of child deaths was 166).
The total number of children
killed or seriously injured fell by 9% to 3,294;
There were 675
pedestrian deaths 1% more than 2005. Serious
casualties (inc fatalities) fell by 1% to 7,051.
The all inclusive pedestrian casualty figure
fell by 7% to 30,982
In 2006, the number of
casualties among motorcycle users increased
by 5% to 599. The all inclusive motorcycle
casualty list for 2006 was 23,326 down 6%.
Pedal cyclist casualties fell from 16,561 in
2005 to 16,196, a drop of 2%. The number of
cyclists killed or seriously injured fell by 1%
overall to 2296, and the number of fatalities
fell marginally by 1% to 146.
