Transport for London has posted a safety
film online and sent out over 140,000 links to cyclists
- 17th July 2009
In an attempt to reduce
cycle accidents in London the
TfL are sending over
140,000 cyclists a link to
a safety training film hoping to reduce the number of cycling
deaths or serious injuries in the capital city.
The film is aimed particularly at the interaction
between lorries and cyclists and how they should behave
around one another to avoid
cycle
accidents resulting with potentially devastating
consequences.
The five minute film is filmed from both the cyclist and
lorry drivers’ perspectives outlining a number of key
issues.
Cyclists shouldn't ride so close to lorries that they can't see
its mirrors, if they can't see the mirrors then the driver
probably can't see the cyclist.
If stopped cyclists should try where possible to ensure that
they are far enough in front of lorries so the driver high in
his cab can easily see them.
Cyclists should not undertake lorries on their left unless the
vehicle has stopped and they are sure they can get past before
it sets of again.
Drivers who are turning left must observe their left mirror
frequently checking especially for cyclists.
Cycling accidents
claimed nine lives in London last year in
road
accidents with HGVs.
The online version of the film can be viewed at
www.tfl.gov.uk/cycling.
