Children must be visible around roads
especially with winter drawing in
- 26th August 2009
With winter drawing nearer and the clocks due to go back in
October, it is imperative that children realise how important it
is that they can be seen around roads easily by motorists.
During 2007 over 3,000 children up to the age of 16 were killed
or seriously injured in
road accidents.
Children's road safety is the parents or carers
responsibility, and it is their duty to ensure that the children in their
care understand the correct behaviour around roads, and the
dangers, and if are too young to fully understand should be
accompanied by someone who does.
There were over 1,900
pedestrian accidents resulting in death or
serious injury involving children during 2007.
Over 500 cycling accidents involving children resulting in death
or serious injury in the same year, and over 800 child
fatalities or serious injuries as a result of
car accidents
where they were a passenger during the same period.
Children’s safety seats when fitted correctly reduce the risk of
fatality to the child by 71% in the under ones and by 54%
between the ages of one and four.
