South Yorkshire is running a campaign
aimed at reducing pedestrian road accidents
- 14th September 2009
South Yorkshire is trying to reduce the number of
pedestrian accidents
by running their 'Pedestrian
Road Skill' campaign.
The high visibility campaign will be seen on trams and buses
targeting pedestrians as they travel, on the outside of buses,
leaflets given out at schools and universities and even on
facebook.
A key message for reducing
pedestrian accidents
from the campaign is to get pedestrians to pay attention around
roads and be aware of potential dangers.
MP3s and mobile phones can be a big distraction around roads,
which can put the users and others at risk of
road accidents through
not concentrating on the road traffic.
Drink and drug users will have impaired judgment and slower
reactions whilst under the influence and so if around roads will
be a danger to themselves and others.
According to the Department for
Transport (DfT) there were 572 deaths and 27,910 injuries as
a result of pedestrian
accidents in 2008 across Great Britain.
THINK! the road
safety organisation says that 11 to 16 year olds are the most
likely to be killed or suffer serious injury as the result of a
pedestrian accident or
cycling accident.
