A bus carrying migrant workers homeward after a day at Alton Towers crashes killing a man and injuring many others, some seriously - 19th August 2008

One man died and around 70 others were injured, some seriously yesterday following a bus crash as it had just left the Alton Towers theme park.

The coach accident happened as it was travelling through Alton, it is believed to have been in a collision with a car causing it to crash through a wall and roll down an embankment into residential gardens.

The coach was carrying migrant farm workers on a day out, who are thought to be from Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and South Africa back to Oundle in Northamptonshire where they are believed to work at Lutton Farm. The dead man is a 26 year old Polish migrant.

The walking wounded were taken to Alton Towers for medical attention, with the seriously injured being flown from the scene by two air ambulances which were in attendance. Another 10 ambulances and 5 rapid response vehicles from the West Midlands Ambulance Service were in attendance. All the passengers who were aboard when the bus accident happened have been accounted for, as has the driver who was seriously injured.

Chief Inspector John Maddox of Staffordshire Police said: "The bus was coming down a steep hill towards the bridge at the bottom, and from what I can see at the scene, that bus has not managed to go round the bend, and has careered through a wall and down a drop into a garden".
