Councils told if they want more speed
cameras they will have to fund them
- 22nd June 2010
The government has told councils wanting more speed cameras that
they will have to fund them themselves.
Junior transport minister Mike Penning has told the House of
Commons that the government will no longer fund “cash cow” fixed
speed cameras and encouraged councils to explore other safety
methods as an alternative.
There are three times more cameras in use than a decade ago and
the Labour party claims that they have helped to cut the number
of deaths and
injuries from road accidents on the nation’s roads.
However Mr Penning said that the rise in the number of speed
cameras has led to concern amongst the public that they are
there to raise money for the Treasury rather than for road
safety purposes.
