The nets closing in on uninsured drivers

New law makes it an offence to keep an uninsured vehicle - 20th January 2009

New laws unveiled today will make it more difficult for uninsured drivers to evade the police.

The new offence of 'Keeper of an uninsured vehicle’ will see reminders sent by the DVLA to the owners of uninsured vehicles.

If these reminders are ignored the owner will be fined £100.  If the owner still fails to insure the vehicle after a set period of time the vehicle may be seized and crushed.

It is estimated that in the UK each year that law abiding motorists insurance premiums are increased by £400 million, due to uninsured driver insurance claims where they have been involved in road accidents.

Current estimates are that the police stop around 400 uninsured drivers every day which results in their vehicles being seized. But the new law should ensure that these insurance cheats have nowhere to hide.

Every year, uninsured driver accidents cause in the region of 160 fatalities, and 23,000 injuries.
