Leeds council introducing 20mph zones
around schools
- 4th June 2010
Leeds City Council is to spend £32,000 in a move designed to
promote road safety near schools.
The council is to trial
20 mph zones near 20 schools in the city with those schools
chosen on the basis of local
pedestrian accident statistics and assessment of site
suitability.
If the trial is successful it will be extended across the city.
Figures show that half of all
road accident
injuries to adults and children alike occur near to 50
particular schools in Leeds.
Councillor Andrew Carter said: “These 20 mph zones, if they
prove successful, will benefit everyone who lives close to
schools, promoting safer streets and reducing traffic
casualties.”
