Tyres are your only contact with the road,
are yours safe? - 12th October 2007
An investigation by
Trading Standards
into rogue repairmen found that the so called experts may not
always be ensuring the vehicles they service have
safe tyres.
A Trading Standards director commented
"Consumers need to know that once they take a punctured tyre to
a business to be repaired, it is to a standard where they can
drive on our roads in complete safety".
A recent assessment carried out by the
Harrow Times group found that 50% of the businesses checked had
insufficient tyre pressures on vehicles. Incorrectly inflated
tyres on vehicles can cause drivers to lose control of their
vehicles more easily.
This could lead to
road accidents
resulting in possible
vehicle damage,
vehicle occupant injury or even
pedestrian injuries. October 2007 was named
Tyre Safety Month by
TyreSafe who are the UK's leading organisation on
tyre safety.
They hope to raise awareness of tyre safety
and the fact that worn, defective or damaged tyres are a major
road safety risk.
Research by
TyreSafe, claims that
nearly three quarters of all cars on the UK's roads have
under-inflated tyres, this can adversely affect a vehicles
handling.
