A recent survey suggests that as many as
350,000 motorists may have driven without insurance in the last
12 months - 25th April 2008
Up to 350,000 British motorists may have
driven uninsured in the last 12 months according to a survey
of 2,000+ adults interviewed by
YouGov.
These drivers are risking prosecution,
fines, costs, points on their license and possible
road accident
compensation claims if they are caught.
This category of driver is more likely to be
involved in
hit and run accidents than normal law abiding motorists.
According to
MoneyExpert.com young people aged between 18 and 24 are the
worst category for this accounting for some 120,000 of cases.
Third party is the legal minimum required
which will cover personal liability and medical costs along with
the other parties vehicle repair costs if the driver is involved
in a
road accident to which the blame is attributed to them.
The Motor
Insurers' Bureau (MIB) estimate that
uninsured drivers increase annual premiums for those that do
pay theirs by around £30 each, with the cost of claims being
around £500 million annually. 46% of uninsured drivers said that
their insurance had lapsed due to an oversight.
Up to 11% said they could not afford
insurance with the same percentage claiming that it was a one
off driving someone else’s car in an emergency.
Some 13% said they had deliberately not
insured themselves and 5% would not disclose the reason.
