Whiplash injury prevention to be tested
by Thatcham as rear impact crashes are now to be rated for new
cars - 17th
October 2008
Thatcham has been selected as the official testing organisation
for the new rear impact ratings, or
whiplash as it is more
commonly known by the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP).
Always trying to improve safety information for consumers Euro
NCAP will from November 2008 for the first time provide as part
of their crash test ratings information on rear impact
whiplash
safety.
Key to the selection of Thatcham for the Euro NCAP crash test
ratings was the research they have done on head restraint and
seat safety over the last four years.
Thatcham is an independently operated, with one of its main
objectives to research ways of reducing motor insurance claim
costs while maintaining or improving safety. So reducing
whiplash compensation claims is an ideal project for them to be
involved with.
Thatcham’s Research Director Andrew Miller said: “At Thatcham
our
whiplash work is one of our key activities as we strive to
reduce the very heavy burden on society and insurers caused by
this common accidental injury. This recognition by Euro NCAP of
Thatcham’s research knowledge and commitment to seat testing is
an important accolade and a real recognition of the investment
made by the UK Insurers in furthering best-practice seat
design.”
