The UK's drivers fall behind their European counterparts in wiper maintenance  - 15th February 2008

A survey conducted by Car Parts Direct the online mail order retailer, has found that the UK's motorists change their windscreen wiper blades less often than their European counterparts in France, Germany and Spain increasing the risk of unnecessary road accidents.

The survey concluded that the Germans changed theirs most frequently, on average every 17 months with the UK coming out worst changing their wipers every 27 months on average.

The Department for Transport has found that poor visibility is a major factor in many road accidents in the UK, with most drivers only replacing their wipers when they are faced with failing their MOT or visibility is seriously impaired.

Car Parts Direct spokesman Mark Cornwall said: “The problem in the UK is education.

Ten years ago adverts would appear on TV showing the benefits of replacing wiper blades and the safety aspects, but not anymore. TV advertising is too expensive for the wiper blade manufacturers and the Government, yet replacing worn windscreen wipers is very important to reduce the risk of road accidents.”

Failing to change your wiper blades before they are in poor condition is not only a danger to other road users, but can also lead to drivers needing to make road accident claims on their insurance which could have been prevented.
