Younger drivers are considered a higher risk
than their older counterparts of being involved in a road
accident so are paying higher insurance premiums - 4th February
2008
Young drivers are finding it harder and more
expensive to get car insurance cover and should shop around for
the best deals say the
Association of British insurers (ABI).
Many car insurers will not provide any cover
for younger drivers as they feel it is too greater risk.
A spokesperson for the ABI Malcolm Tarling
explained that adolescent drivers are far more likely to be
involved in a
road accident whilst driving, so increasing the likelihood
of a car accident
claim.
He went on to say that consumers should shop
around because there are competitive deals offered by some
companies who may provide a better deal than they have already
found.
Road
safety charity Brake state that younger drivers are far more
likely to be involved
car accidents than older drivers.
In research carried out by Brake and
Green Flag, 4,640
drivers were questioned, 533 of who were 17-24 years of age and
classed as young drivers, it was found that:
33 percent of young drivers aged 17-24 admit
overtaking whilst they could not see what was coming compared to
just 9 percent of older drivers.
9 percent of young drivers admit to taking
illegal drugs and driving compared to 3 percent of older
drivers.
Up to 50 percent of young drivers said they
use a hand held phone whilst driving with 35 percent of older
drivers owning up to this.
